Targeted drills to improve your handicap
Front Toss Power Drive
Partner tosses balls from 10-12 feet in front. Focus on attacking the ball out front with full hip rotation. Aim for the back of the cage netting. 3 rounds of 10 swings.
Heavy Bat Tee Work
Use a weighted bat or bat sleeve for 3 sets of 10 swings off a tee. Focus on driving through the ball with maximum force. This builds bat speed and strength through the zone, directly increasing exit velocity.
Medicine Ball Rotational Throws
Stand sideways to a wall, rotate and throw a 6-8 lb medicine ball into the wall. 3 sets of 10 throws each side. Builds the core rotational power that drives exit velocity.
Overload/Underload Training
Alternate between a heavy bat (overload) and a light bat (underload) for sets of 5 swings each. This neuromuscular training increases bat speed by 3-5 mph over 4-6 weeks.
Flat Bat Drill
Using a flat training bat or paddle, hit off a tee or soft toss. The flat surface forces perfect barrel alignment on every swing, reducing mishits that cause velocity drops.
Inside-Outside Tee Drill
Set up two tees: one inside, one outside. Alternate hitting inside pitches to pull side and outside pitches to opposite field. 5 rounds of 6 swings. Builds consistent contact regardless of pitch location.
One-Hand Tee Drill (Top Hand)
Using only your top hand, take 10 swings off a tee focusing on keeping the barrel in the zone as long as possible. This eliminates casting and promotes a consistent barrel path.
Timing Ladder Drill
Have a pitcher throw at varying speeds (slow, medium, fast) in random order. Focus on staying back and letting the ball travel. 3 sets of 10 pitches. Reduces timing-based velocity variance.
10-Swing Challenge
Take 10 swings off a tee with the goal of keeping all exit velocities within a 5 mph range. Track each swing. If any swing falls outside the range, restart the set. Builds mental focus and mechanical consistency.
Eyes Closed Tee Drill
Set up on a tee, take your stance, close your eyes, and swing. This forces your body to rely on muscle memory rather than visual adjustments. 2 sets of 10. Builds repeatable mechanics.
Rhythm and Tempo Drill
Use a metronome set to 60 BPM. Load on beat 1, stride on beat 2, swing on beat 3. Take 3 sets of 10 swings maintaining the same tempo. Consistent timing leads to consistent contact.
Video Feedback Loop
Record 10 swings from the side view. Review each swing between sets, identifying mechanical differences between your best and worst exit velocities. Make one adjustment per set. 3 sets total.
Cage Work: Live At-Bats
Face live pitching or a pitching machine. Treat each pitch like a game at-bat with a plan (look fastball, adjust to off-speed). 3 rounds of 10 pitches. Bridges practice to game performance.
Pre-Session Dynamic Warm-Up
Arm circles, torso rotations, hip openers, and band pull-aparts. Follow with 10 dry swings at 50%, 75%, and 100% effort. Essential before every Hitter Handicap session.
